Out Of Hiding-Episode 96

Posted on: December 13, 2012

Pam

Episode 96 features Kelsey Smith, who hails from Springfield, Illinois. Kelsey is currently a student at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point. Kelsey will graduate in May 2013 with a history degree.

Kelsey loves to travel and is considering involvement with the Peace Corps.

We met in July in Tampa, FL at the National Stuttering Association (NSA) conference. It was Kelsey’s first conference. We talk about her experience as a first timer and how the conference helped her move towards acceptance.

Listen is as we also discuss interviews, phone calls versus face to face conversations, advertising and disclosing, and Kelsey’s recent public speaking success.

This was a great conversation. Feel free to leave comments or ask questions or just let Kelsey know what a great job she did. Remember, feedback is a gift.

Music used in this episode, “Per Anima,” is credited to ccMixter.

THANKS so much for this, Pamela and Kelsey…..I enjoyed it. Isn’t this your birthday, Pamela? I heard you turned 25 today.

Kelsey brought up a good point about stuttering more during phone conversations as opposed to talking to people face to face. I’ve experienced the same a number of times and I think it’s because of what she mentions – the inability to maintain eye contact over a phone call.

I used to think it’s because of the anxiety I had developed over the many years of avoiding calls. After listening to her, I’m almost weighing in the possibility of the inability to see the person and the person not knowing that we stutter, which leads to the anxiety and hence more dysfluencies.

Great podcast though! The more I listen to you guys talk about presentations and public speaking, the more inspired I get to make my stubborn self join a local Toastmasters..haha
